Charles Adrian Rutherford was born in California where at an early age he showed a considerable aptitude for painting - indeed at the age of 19 years his work was recognized favourably by the German Kaiser. His work was exhibited both in the United States and in England.

This is a powerful, moody painting of considerable quality and confirms Rutherford as an exceptionally talented artist.
