Northwind passing Dungeness
Oil on canvas, signed 24 x 30 in original frame

William Barnett Spencer
British
Mid 19C

William Barnett Spencer and his brother were both renowned ship portraitists working in the second and third quarters of the 19th Century. The Northwind was built in Quebec on the St. Lawrence river and was owned by Pearson of Whitby.

This is a wonderful example of a ship portrait of a quality that is becoming very rare - unless you are very rich. This beautiful painting is an affordable example of the art of the ship portrait painter many of which were painted for the owners shortly after launch. Purchased in the United States where the low dollar helped keep the price within reasonable bounds.
